Our idea

Solar-powered wildlife cameras.

We are exploring a network of autonomous cameras positioned at strategic observation points. Each is intended to operate independently, on solar energy and battery storage. Using computer vision, the system aims to:

  1. 01Detect animals automatically
  2. 02Identify different wildlife species
  3. 03Recognise individual animals where possible
  4. 04Track repeated observations
  5. 05Build structured wildlife datasets
  6. 06Support more frequent population monitoring

Case study · Individual recognition

No two zebras are striped alike.

Each zebra has a unique stripe pattern. We are exploring whether computer vision can use it to recognise individual animals.

Recognising returning animals could help avoid double-counting and improve population estimates.

Built for the field. Still in development.

Solar power and autonomous operation are core design goals for remote environments. Development began in 2026. Vrede Technologies is not presenting a finished product, verified accuracy figures or established monitoring outcomes at this stage.

Roadmap

Project stages.

Currently in research and concept development.

Phase I

Research & concept

Defining requirements from real conditions on the ranch. Studying hardware, power and model options.

Current

Phase II

First prototype

A single solar-powered unit at one waterhole. Testing durability, power budget and image quality.

Next

Phase III

Recognition models

Training and evaluating species detection and individual zebra stripe recognition.

Planned

Phase IV

Field network

Multiple units across the property, and a simple interface for reviewing observations.

Planned

Phase V

Beyond Vrede

Exploring affordable versions for other ranches, reserves and conservation organisations.

Raised in the Namibian bush, where you learn to read the land before you learn to read books.

At 21, I’m an industrial engineer working in Europe’s startup scene. Vrede Technologies is where my two worlds meet: the wild country I grew up in and the technology I build, brought home to understand our wildlife as never before.
